Most catering software has been designed to run on proprietary database interface systems.

Bread and Blossoms does not. It runs as an application sitting on top of the IBM®/Lotus® Smartsuite® office software package.

By electing to go this route we have empowered our users to employ their information as they decide they need to use it - not as we proscribe it.

Our users are automatically linked into html page construction, direct .ftp up-links, direct e-mail from any part of the package, powerful import and export connectability, powerful ability to re-configure and tweak your designs.

But most important: IBM®/Lotus® has tightly integrated the package so that you will not have to struggle and I will not need to say "no" - never a good word to use with a client and one that I trust that I won't have to use to much to you. / Eric Starck

I am now part of a "boutique", nitty gritty, get-it-done consultant group - a group of four plus two four leggeds. We are called Panetiere Marketing Advisors and we work for hotel sales and marketing departments and their associated banquet departments.

I, of course, am the one with the "in the trenches" sagaciousness (just lost you and me both?) about the catering side. My wife, Sandy Heydt, is the brains - having managed four and five star hotels, run sales and marketing departments, and overseen catering and banquet divisions. She brings the essential marketing and sales drive to Bread and Blossoms, where, as you will see , we've placed such a strong emphasis.

I was led into software programming, template design, graphic design and web design. by my interest in strategizing how best to attain our market share. I needed to learn how to find the markets for catering, then how to capture a small part of those markets, how to measure the success of the marketing and the impact on gross and net revenues.

I trained, decades ago, as an architectural historian and then as an architect- so the impact of visual details combines with the potency of a designed environment to flesh out what I do now. It is all one : one puzzle much of the time, but always a puzzle where we can find an answer that will help improve our lives and our business acumen.

Your place card? - yes, the planning section of the proposal system will even show how and where the place cards will be dealt with and then will become part of the evnt schedule.

Another avenue back to the home page: just like Bread and Blossoms' itself, you get several ways to attack the same problem . . .

eric starck: designer and programmer

I was, for fifteen years, a caterer before crossing the Styx and dropping into the ner-world of software programming.

The business that I ran was a mid-size gourmet caterer with associated event planning. We also had two other profit centers: daily corporate foodservice and contract catering.

I do know, only too well, what it takes to automate this business and what are the stumbling blocks that we will all encounter in trying to implement such a process. My own knees are only too bruised and bandaged from my own stumbles. Ouch.

The Strain: Trying to Find A Software Program That Would Work for Us

The struggle to make the other catering software programs work for our business, the roadblocks, the inhospitable proprietary systems with their rinky-dink prohibitions, the difficulties of exporting or importing to our accounting and mailing software, and, then the ugliness of the forms, themselves: they were not able to sell our business against our formidable competition: 505 other caterers in our market.

We needed a proposal system that could automate our workload but that, first, was capable of selling the us.

The Best Program Was Much Too Expensive for Our Business

We could not make sense out of an extremely complicated program that was capable of helping us but the cost of which we could project to be upwards of $100,000 with endless training and tweaking costs on top of that.

So it was time to make our own - and here we have grown it into one that might be a fit for you.
